FUNDS AT WORK:

How First 5 Riverside is making an impact in the community.

Child Safety Starts With Education

That’s why the Riverside County Department of Public Health Injury Prevention Services was selected to run a program aimed at preventing infant and childhood injuries and fatalities by providing resources, safety supplies and information to empower families in creating safe and nurturing environments for children. Last year, the program reached more than 3,100 children through age 5 and 2,400 caregivers in Riverside County through home, water and child passenger safety. Visit Injury Prevention Services for more information and program details.

Beat the Heat

As the temperatures rise, so do the heat warnings. The Community Action Partnership (CAP) coordinates cool centers to provide public drop-in sites for those in need of temporary relief from the heat. For additional information, CAP is running a Summer Energy Crisis Hotline at (888) 636-8676. See list of cooling centers in Riverside County.

Child Care Needs Assessed

In an effort to define child care needs and make decisions in allocating resources, the Riverside County Children & Families Commission hired the Advancement Project’s Healthy City team to analyze Riverside County child care and preschool data, along with key economic indicators. Read more about their findings and recommendations in a report recently presented to the Commission.

Keeping Kids H2O Safe

Drowning is among the leading causes of death for children younger than 5 in California. More than 80 percent of drownings and near-drownings occur in backyard pools, say Riverside County health officials. Keep children safe and supervised around water by following some easy TIPS.

Go Ahead, Play With Your Food

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for children 2 to 5 years old. There are many factors for the increase in obesity, but establishing healthy habits at home continues to be essential in combating this trend. Find creative ways to get children to eat more fruits and vegetables this month, which is National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month.
